Seeking five Democrats with a conscience
TITUSVILLE, FL — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today announced that Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives will begin a new effort to have the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act enacted into law during the 117th Congress.
“It’s incredible to even be saying or thinking this, but with hardly any exceptions, the Democrats in the House and Senate have refused to pass a bill that would increase protections for babies who are born alive after a failed abortion,” Father Pavone said. “Thankfully, Republicans are not willing to take no for an answer.”
On April 14, Florida Republican Rep. Kat Cammack will manage the discharge petition to force the Democrat leadership to vote on H.R. 619. The petition will remain valid until the close of the 117th Congress in December 2022.
“The petition needs the signature of 218 representatives and by April 14 Republicans expect to hold 213 seats,” Father Pavone explained. “That means we need just five Democrats with a conscience to cross the aisle to say newborn babies deserve equal protection under the laws of the United States.”
All the Republicans but only three Democrats signed the discharge petition for the same bill in the 116th Congress.
The bill requires a medical professional present at the live birth to offer the same degree of care that would be given to any other premature baby of the same gestational age; requires healthcare workers to report violations, and gives mothers the right to sue the abortionist.
“We have hundreds of documented cases of babies born alive after abortion. These have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and from only seven states that have reporting requirements in regard to babies born alive,” Father Pavone said. “I appeal to the Democrats to stop obstructing this common-sense bill that enjoys vast majority support in the American public.”
