248 Lawmakers vow fight to protect the Hyde Amendment

TITUSVILLE, FL – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today thanked Republican members of the U.S. House and Senate for vowing to oppose any legislation that weakens or seeks to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which protects American taxpayers for paying for most abortions, and which has saved more than 2.4 million lives.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, signed by 48 Republican senators, Montana Sen. Steve Daines, who leads the Pro-life Caucus in the Senate, wrote: “Abortion is not health care; rather, it is a brutal procedure that destroys the life of an innocent unborn child. The Hyde Amendment reflects a consensus that millions of pro-life Americans who are profoundly opposed to abortion should not be coerced into paying for it or incentivizing it with their taxpayer dollars.”

The letter from the Senators followed one signed by 200 House members in January. Both letters noted the bipartisan support the Hyde Amendment has garnered since 1976.

“No president in American history has ever vetoed an appropriations bill due to its inclusion of the Hyde Amendment,” the House letter said. “… Years of public polling indicates that repealing the Hyde Amendment is opposed by most of the American public.”

Father Pavone commented: “This show of strength by very close to half of our elected officials in Washington cannot be ignored. Americans have been very clear that they do not want to pay for the wanton destruction of innocent human life.

“I applaud these Senators and Representatives for refusing to bow down before the abortion extremism of the Democrat party, whose platform explicitly calls for the removal of the Hyde Amendment, which Joe Biden once supported but now also opposes. We, the voters, have to do our part by letting Democrats in the House and Senate know that we will not stand for any attempts to do away with the Hyde Amendment.”

Father Pavone also noted that Rep. Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican who leads the Pro-Life Caucus in the House, has introduced the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, H.R. 18. The bill would make permanent the exclusion of abortion from spending bills, rather than the current need for Congress to have multiple battles each session, on multiple appropriations bills, about whether or not our tax money will go to abortion.

“I’m confident pro-lifers will regain the majority in the House and Senate in the next election, but it’s important right now to protect American taxpayer dollars from funding abortion. Poll after poll, including the most recent Marist poll from just a few weeks ago, shows that the public is behind us.”
