Families Shouldn’t Have to Resort to Watching Adult-Rated TV Shows for Family Viewing

“Hollywood should realize that this is a golden opportunity to better serve an underserved demographic."

LOS ANGELES – The Parents Television Council is urging Hollywood to reverse the trend highlighted by The New York Times that parents are resorting to watching mature-rated TV programs with their children because there is a void of programs suitable for parents and children to watch together.

“As families spend more time together due to the pandemic, it’s only natural that they would want to watch programs together. But there’s a void of appropriate TV programs that fall between Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Game of Thrones,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

The New York Times reports that families are resorting to watching adult-rated TV shows that are likely going to be inappropriate, or even harmful, to children. Why? Because Hollywood very rarely produces TV-G-rated content. But families want suitable, family-quality TV programs to watch together.

“Hollywood should realize that this is a golden opportunity to better serve an underserved demographic.

“At the same time, parents should remember that even though they might be there to mitigate harmful messages, they are still only mitigating. Watching adult content with kids does not entirely eliminate the harm done by exposing children to content that is neither emotionally nor developmentally appropriate for them.”
