WATERLOO REGION — Catholic board trustee Greg Reitzel is responding to backlash over comments he made during a Waterloo Catholic District School Board meeting Monday.
At the meeting trustees were told a flag had been chosen by the administration to acknowledge Pride month. On the flag there is an illustration of Jesus with his arms outstretched, standing in front of a colourful crowd of people with the words, “We are all wonderfully made — we love because he first loved us (1 John 4:19).”
Trustee Reitzel said at the meeting that he supported the flag choice.
“I think this shows that we care about everybody, everybody is made in the image of God, we are to love everybody,” he said.
He also said if the Pride flag was flown at schools, he would have had to resign. He said his belief is that “ ‘Pride’ is the deadliest of the deadly sins.”
“I could not support a decision to actually fly a Pride flag,” he said.
