This is a really sad turn of events.
The Daily Wire reports that John Kasich, Governor of Ohio, will veto a bill that would outlaw abortions on babies with a detectable heartbeat.
Kasich already vetoed the “heartbeat bill” in 2016; it would have banned abortions once a baby’s heartbeat was detected, but he insisted that even if he signed the bill, it would later be overturned, asserting, “The State of Ohio will be the losing party in that lawsuit and will be forced to cover the legal fees for the pro-choice activists’ lawyers. Therefore, this veto is in the public interest.”
The bill would effectively ban most abortions in Ohio. Though there are enough votes in the Ohio House to overturn Kasich’s veto, the Senate will take no action on the bill until Kasich leaves office. Governor-elect Mike DeWine takes office in January.
Kasich’s reasoning seems flawed to me. It seems rather that such a case might serve to be the catalyst to overturn Roe if heard by the current U.S. Supreme Court. If John Kasich has his way, we will never know.
