LOUISVILLE, Ky. —Gov. Andy Beshear is drawing the ire of Republican lawmakers in Kentucky after one of the bills he vetoed had to do with abortion regulations in the commonwealth.
House Bill 2 would have given Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron the authority to regulate and enforce violations on abortion clinics in Kentucky without needing clearance from the governor’s office.
The bill passed by the Republican supermajority in the legislature is identical to one Beshear vetoed last year that would have given Cameron’s office more authority.
Last year’s bill also would have given Cameron the power to suspend abortions as an elective procedure during the coronavirus outbreak.
Beshear, during his COVID-19 briefing Tuesday, did not mention the abortion bill, addressing the bills that sought to curb his executive powers during the pandemic.
