“Not one inch eastward.”

In 1990, US Secretary of State James Baker promised then-Soviet President Mikhael Gorbachev that NATO would not expand — in his exact words, NATO would move “not one inch eastward.”

His promise was backed by assurances from West Germany, Britain and France.

Relying directly on that promise, Gorbachev agreed to the reunification of East and West Germany and its full membership in NATO, leading to the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact — and the official end of the Cold War in 1991. Amazing events.

Since then, under our watch and with our approval, NATO has added not 1, not 2, but 16 new member states, with the prior administration lobbying for Ukraine to become the next.

“Not one inch eastward.”
