As reported by the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) of July 26, 2019, “Covering Climate Now” is a media initiative of some 60 signatory media outlets worldwide, who are intent on scaring people into compliance on climate change policies like carbon taxes and expensive, inadequate renewables, according to Friends of Science Society.
A scientific commentary in Nature Climate Change of Vol 9 (pre-print) August 2019 by Asayama et al demands that IPCC scientists take responsibility and denounce the false apocalyptic media claims stemming from the SR15 report.
Asayam et al write “This rise of climate deadline-ism raises a central question about the role of science in politics. Despite good intentions, the rhetoric of a 2030 deadline is the political (mis)use of science for setting an artificial deadline. Although the rhetoric is usually seen by scientists as a misleading interpretation of the IPCC findings, the IPCC and most climate scientists have so far kept silent, thereby implicitly seeming to endorse it.”
This calming headline news is not to be found in the “Covering Climate Now” media partners.
Likewise, the Columbia’s CJR article claims that catastrophic temperatures and record-breaking extreme weather is not supported by the evidence from the either the IPCC SR15 report or the earlier IPCC SREX (2012) report on extreme weather.
As climate scientist Dr. Judith Curry reported to the US Senate on July 16, 2014, after the release of the IPCC AR5 report, the case for human-caused climate change/global warming is weakened by the evidence of a near (now) 20 year ‘pause’ in global warming, despite a significant rise in carbon dioxide. Curry and others now report that carbon dioxide is not the control knob that can fine tune climate.
Roger Pielke, Jr.’s book “The Rightful Place of Science: Disasters and Climate Change” shows that there is no trend to more extreme weather or financial losses.
Friends of Science says the “Covering Climate Now” project looks more like a global advertorial campaign, pointing out that the CJR masthead of the article features wind farms and the text refers to “…spectacular advances in solar, wind and energy efficiency illustrate how doing right by the climate can make our societies better, not worse, if we’re smart about it.”
Bill Gates recently said we must stop jerking around with wind and solar, noting that “There is no substitute (for fossil fuels) for how the industrial economy runs today.”

After years of research and unlimited funds, on Nov. 14, 2018, Google engineers reported in IEEE that wind and solar will not stop climate change. In 2016, in MRS Journal on May 23, 2016, Professor Michael Kelly had already reported that wind and solar cannot support basic society. His view is that rapid decarbonization will result in mass deaths.

Friends of Science asks if journalists claim to have a sacred responsibility, then we, the public, expect to see them report on these matters in equal measure to their renewable advertorial campaigns and climate hysteria headlines.
