Jimmy Akin, senior apologist at Catholic Answers, was interviewed by the National Catholic Register on the subject of ghosts. Do they exist? Darn straight, they do! But fear not. They are not malicious. Demons, on the other hand, are malicious.
Scripture is not silent on the matter. In 1 Samuel 28, King Saul, desperate for guidance before battle, seeks out a medium in Endor — despite having banned such practices. He asks her to summon the prophet Samuel, who had died. The medium succeeds, and Samuel appears to rebuke Saul and foretell his defeat and death. See the picture included with this article above.
Akin says:
In Matthew 14:26 and Mark 6:49, the disciples see Jesus walking on the water and think it is a ghost. In Luke 24:37, they think the Risen Jesus is a ghost. In none of these passages does Jesus tell them ghosts do not exist; in fact, in Luke 24:39, he tells them that “a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”

I have personally never encountered a ghost but I do believe they exist, as Scripture seems to prove. I expect to be passing out candy tonight at our home in Houston. Perhaps I will see one.
Happy All Hallows Eve, everyone!
