TITUSVILLE, FL — Priests for Life National Director Frank Pavone today reacted to Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich’s plan to honor pro-abortion Sen. Dick Durbin with a lifetime achievement award.
“Since U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin was elected in 1996 to serve the people of Illinois, he has supported every pro-abortion initiative to reach the Senate floor and voted against any bill that would protect the unborn, their mothers and the rights of parents of minor girls,” Pavone said. “For Cardinal Cupich to extend an honor to him is deeply offensive to countless Americans, whether Catholic or not, who want to see an end to the massive killing of babies.
“Pro-life Americans want leaders, both in government and in the Church, who will oppose child-killing unambiguously, and avoid mixed messages or, as St. Paul says, an uncertain trumpet blast (see 1 Cor.14:8).
“Furthermore, what happened to the statement published by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2004 which said, ‘The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.’”
Pavone continued: “I wholeheartedly support calls by Springfield, Illinois Bishop Thomas Paprocki and San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone for Cardinal Cupich to rescind this undeserved honor for Durbin. I also call on all prolife Americans to sign our petition to that effect at ProLifePetition.com
“Whether on the part of bishops or anyone else, the time for supporting, encouraging, or justifying Democrat politicians is over. The Democrat Party has unapologetically embraced a holocaust against the unborn. They deserve neither awards nor votes,” Pavone concluded.
