Mom and I have been on “Pope Watch” all day, eagerly anticipating the white smoke which indicated to the world: Habemus Papam! This is Latin for “We have a Pope!” I wasn’t going to post anything about it but some have been asking me to, so here goes nothin’. After all, I’m Catholic. I must have an opinion, right?
Actually, no. I don’t have much of an opinion about this pope. What I mean is, I just don’t know what to think about him. The proof will be in the pudding, it seems to me. We need to pray for him and give him a chance. That seems to be what Cardinal Burke is saying, too.
Cardinal Burke pointed to something good and familiar to him about this pope as he asked us to pray for him. I think there is no better advice.

I’ve been reading and translating some of his Spanish homilies from the past five years in Peru. Today, I published a translated excerpt on Elijah, and tomorrow I’ll share a more extensive reflection on vocation and discipleship. In these two homilies alone, we see a solid, traditional approach to sacred scripture—one that brings Christ’s words to bear on the needs of the faithful today. His preaching speaks to the faithful, not at them, and when combined with his heartfelt words in Italian and Spanish from the balcony of St. Peter’s, I believe he offers real hope for the Church as we witness to a world in crisis. Viva il Papa!
