
Pope Francis made the unusual, unprecedented move of inserting himself into U.S. politics, writing a letter to every U.S. bishop criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration policy of mass deportation, calling it a “major crisis.” He also took the occasion to counteract Vice President J.D. Vance’s comments on ordo amoris — ordered love. But there has been pushback, some of it very strong, from Americans who believe the pope’s criticisms are unjust, or at the least, selective theology.
