The Bishops of the Philippines are ready to receive the vaccine against Covid-19 in public in order to help allay the fears of the population. “Bishops can also receive the anti-Covid vaccine on television, so that we can encourage people and overcome fears of vaccination”, said Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao, President of the Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), recalling that both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI also received it.
The Vatican provided guidance that still applies today. The PAL 2005 document explained that Catholics may use, in a narrowly defined limit, vaccines prepared with cell lines derived from aborted children, but with strong admonishments regarding our obligations to protest. As we exercise prudential judgment about our vaccine choices, it is a good time to review our obligations.
I think it’s safe to say that many bishops have become flippant about this issue.
